And About Zoos...

I remember this bit in Calvin and Hobbes, when Calvin comes running to Hobbes and says, Mom's taking us to the zoo, will you come? And Hobbes says, sure, but only if we can go to the prison and look at the prisoners there afterwards.

I have mixed feelings about zoos. Any views?

I'd posted a comment here a while back (to one of Hurree's posts on zoos).....and i'm trying to think back to that.

I too have very mixed feelings about zoos. It used to be terrible feelings...but then I've come to visit some zoos like Seattle's Woodland park (which has a fabulous raptor rescue and rehab center) and the Phoenix zoo in Arizona (which was largely responsible for reintroducing the Arabian Onyx back into the wild and saving it from extinction). Zoos here have moved on from being "animal displays" to centres for conservation, and education (with serious displays on ecosystems, habitats, threats to habitats, things you can do to prevent that, extinction charts etc). So....it's a whole new world.

The primate centre needs to be seen to be believed....it's not the wild....and makes the apes lazy, but it has soooo much effort put into it...it's amazing.

But thousands of zoos across the world only serve to torment animals.....so, my feelings remain mixed.

sunil, i agree. there are zoos and there are zoos. the 'animal display' ones are quite dismal, but yes, there are some excellent centres for conservation and education. at the other end of the spectrum are places where animals are kept in too-small, too-dirty spaces, teased and irritated by trippers, and generally neglected. more on this later.
